MATERIAL GIRLS
DESIGN COLLECTIVE
We are a newly formed collective consisting of four young designers. Together, we use materials to embrace playfulness, intuition, collaboration and explore what it means to create spaces together.
- SIEN ENTIUS
Sien Entius, originally trained as a furniture maker, starter to work with textiles as a designer. This became an ongoing fascination between fashion and furniture. She explores combinations of textiles and wood. For the Material Girls exhibition, this resulted in furniture where textiles show an imagined shape of a cabinet on a wooden frame, and a stool with wool applied as upholstery. She also explores how textiles can form constructions, resulting in more abstract scultpures.
- CARYS HIGGINS
Carys Higgins is a multi-disciplinary designer based in London exploring techniques in glass fusing, textiles and veneer. Her projects start with human interactions, interventions and curiosity. For the Material Girls exhibition she has displayed a collection of moth repellent clothes, photographic glass plates of people eating and veneer covered shelves that play with interrupting wood grain patterns.
- NELL MAHER
Nell is a textile designer based in Belgium. She uses reclaimed Flemish wool to create landscape wall tapestries. Her hand-crafted felting tools and techniques make it possible to apply the material in a detailed and textured manner. She uses mostly natural dyes to colour the wool as she strives to give life to a wasted material.
- MARTHA NASH
Martha is a multi-disciplinary designer based in London. Having studied from Design Academy Eindhoven, she graduated with a Masters in Ceramic and Glass at Royal College of Art in London. Her work focuses on combining storytelling and humour with contemporary craft. Her ‘Groovework’ series explores how three hand-crafted chisels can be used to create a range of objects varying in form, material and function.
